The basic thing that you need to know is, save money because light and water are charged avery three months, it means that every three months you will need to pay 3 months of water and 3 months of electricity, if you have gas they send you a bill every two months.
When I first came here, was winter, in my country the weather is so hot and I couldn't live without heater, unfortunately my unit didn't have gas heater, everything was electric, after three months, wow the surprise, AU$780.00 for three months electricity and more AU$80.00 for water.
It is good idea when you rent a house, it is good idea to find something with gas heater, when you take shower, wash your dishes and warm your house, everything is gas, it's a little bit cheaper and you can use a little bit more.
How to save lots of electricity:
What I did was, to sleep we use now just 19º or 20º, turning off during the day when we are at home or just putting the temperature down to 16º or 17º.
Take your shower but do not abuse of the temperature, take it hot not really hot like burning, if you need to take that really hot shower, be quick, otherwise you will burn your money, lol.
Do not leave TVs, DVDs, or every electronic or appliance in standby, if you are not using turn it off, some of them are ok, but all of them ... never.
Never wash your car at home, prefer self car wash, you pay 4 or 6 dollars and wash your car.
If you have a garden and need watering, be quick and with no much water, if you have a small garden use watering can.
If you need to buy big appliances like fridge, refrigerator, washing machine, dryer..., have a look on energy rating, 5 starts is magnificent, save lots of electricity, never buy less then 3 starts, it will burn you money in electricity.

it shows you how many kWh you will spend for year using, e.g every day on cicle x
Every appliance comes with the related label on it, like this tv, it is just 2 1/2 stars, is not good one, but if you watch tv for a couple of hours a day it should be ok, otherwise it is not a good one.
Sometimes is good idea to spend a little bit more money when buying those appliance and save a lot in electricity and water
